This weekend the TSS&DL Academy u15 squad were due to play MGL North in the final of the Gaynor Cup and the TSS&DL Academy u13 squad were due to play NECSL however due to level 5 restrictions both were postponed which the TSS&DL fully supported. However on Friday 23rd the TSS&DL were informed by email that the competitions were cancelled without consulting any of the leagues involved.
The TSS&DL and its Clubs work hard to promote girls soccer in Tipperary however we find this decision will now have a negative effect on participating numbers as girls will now move to other sports this is despite the FAI 2020 initiative which looks to promote female participation in Sport this decision totally contradicts this especially as this is the last Gaynor Competition for 8 of the squad. The FAI really need to look at themselves and ask are we here to support grassroots soccer which is the bedrock of the game or are they only interested in so called elite we ask that because while this decision was taken early in the week to cancel the competition players from the TSS&DL were been contacted by the same organisation and asked to attend international trials in December which is a fantastic achievement and points to the strength of girls soccer in Tipperary but the question has to be asked you can bring players from all over the country for trials but you cant allow teams play once the situation allows and again the TSS&DL or clubs were not informed of this so we could promote the achievements of the players and had to be notified by parents again. The Gaynor Cup competition was postponed in june restarts in September reaches the final and semifinal stages and is then cancelled. The TSS&DL had to send out messages late last night to over 40 players and coaches informing them of the decision rather than find out on social media and the irony of this is the email informing us of the decision was sent out 15 minutes before the Irish Senior Women's National team played Ukrainian in one of the biggest games in recent years the message this sends is unbelievable given that all the players on the team all came from grassroots soccer. The TSS&DL along with other league's will be contacting the FAI with one simple message this is unacceptable and want a commitment that the games will be played once the situation allows.
